Auguste Rodin. The Kiss - The Couples

This autumn the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung presents the exhibition "Auguste Rodin. The Kiss - The Couples". As curator for this project, we are pleased to have been able to engage the Rodin scholar Dr. Anne-Marie Bonnet, Professor of Art History at Bonn University.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the full scale plaster model for Rodin's famous sculpture The Kiss, at once a symbol and an icon of sensual love. The prevailing image of Rodin as an homme à femmes, is here being challenged through a new consideration of his work.

By closely examining the theme of the couple for the first time, it becomes clear that Rodin's attitude towards women as muse and a source of inspiration is much more complex than has previously been thought.

The exhibition is divided in the following themes:
  • Couples deriving from "The Gates of Hell"
  • Allegorical Couples
  • The Artist and His Muse
  • Biblical, Mythological and Literary Couples
  • Sapphic Couples
  • Mother and child.

Thirty-eight sculptures in marble, bronze and plaster from all phases of Rodin's career are complemented by one hundred drawings, watercolours, photogravures and photographs. After completing his sculptures, Rodin himself authorized photographs of them, showing quite a unique perspective on his art.
